What should you do first when a pipe bursts?

The first thing to do when a pipe bursts is shut off the main water valve to the house, before you mop, move furniture or make a call. Stopping the flow limits the damage more than any other step. Next, keep clear of water near outlets or appliances, then drain what is left in the lines.

Most North Texas homes sit on a slab with no basement, so check where the supply line enters, often an outside wall or the garage, and turn the handle clockwise until snug. If there is no valve or it will not close, call your city water utility to shut it off at the meter. Water rising in the street or meter box is the city’s to fix, while a break between the meter and the house is the homeowner’s stretch of pipe.

With the water off, deal with electricity. If water is near outlets, appliances or the breaker panel, switch off those circuits only if you can reach the panel without standing in water; otherwise stay out. Then open the faucets, lowest first, and flush the toilets to drain the lines. If water is coming through the ceiling, keep out from under sagging drywall.

Before cleanup, take photos and video of the break, the standing water and anything damaged, and keep receipts. Homeowners policies often cover sudden water damage from a burst pipe, but usually not the failed pipe itself or a leak that was ignored.

One limit: these steps stop the damage but cannot find a hidden break. A split inside a wall or under the slab may show only as bubbling paint, soft drywall or a meter still moving with every fixture off, and finding it takes water leak detection. Leave the main off until a licensed plumber repairs the pipe.
