Neither is better for every sewer line. Lining is usually the better choice when the old pipe is still round and aligned, because it needs little or no digging. Pipe bursting is better when the pipe has collapsed, sagged, or needs to be larger, because it replaces the pipe instead of relying on it.
Lining builds a new pipe inside the old one. A resin-saturated liner goes in through a cleanout, presses against the old pipe wall, and cures hard. The old pipe has to be continuous enough to hold it. Pipe bursting pulls a cone-shaped head through the old pipe, cracking it outward while a new pipe follows in the same path. It needs a pit at each end, but the old pipe’s condition matters less.
Trenchless pipe lining starts at $3,500+. Final cost depends on length, access, and inspection findings. Under DFW slab foundations, lining through a cleanout avoids breaking the floor. Bursting needs clearance, because the old pipe breaks outward into the soil, which matters near other buried utilities.
A liner follows the old pipe’s shape, so it seals a sagging section but does not level it. On one DFW home sale, the camera showed a pipe too far out of alignment for a liner. Our crew made a small-dig repair at the same price instead. The camera decides.
