A plumbing vent lets air into your drain system and lets sewer gas out above the roof. The air keeps water flowing freely and protects the water seal in every trap. Without a working vent, drains slow down, gurgle, and can pull sewer gas into the house.
Water running down a drain pushes air ahead of it and pulls a vacuum behind it. The vent balances that pressure. It connects to the drain lines inside the walls and runs up through the roof. Air enters as water leaves. That balance keeps water in each trap, the curved pipe under a sink or inside a toilet. Trap water is the only thing stopping sewer gas from coming up the drain.
Most DFW homes have one or more vent stacks, the short pipes visible on the roof. Some newer homes and remodels use air admittance valves under sinks instead: one-way valves that let air in without a roof pipe.
A vent works silently until it fails. Leaves, nests, or a cracked vent pipe in the attic can all stop it, and air admittance valves wear out and stick. Many vent symptoms also look exactly like a main line clog. A gurgling drain is not proof the vent failed. Our guide to gurgling drains covers the other causes.
