A sewer lateral inspection is a camera run through the private pipe that carries waste from your house to the city sewer main. It shows cracks, roots, sags, and separated joints before they cause a backup. In most DFW cities the homeowner owns that pipe and pays to repair it, which is why buyers ask for one before closing.
The lateral is the part of the sewer the city does not maintain. A technician feeds a waterproof camera through a cleanout and records the full length of the line, marking the distance to every defect. The footage shows the pipe material, where roots enter, whether any section holds standing water, and whether the pipe is still round enough to line.
Standard Texas home inspections usually leave the lateral out, so buyers order it separately. On one DFW home sale, a camera found roots in the line. An inspection shows the pipe’s condition on the day of the run. It does not guarantee the future, and heavy buildup can hide defects until the line is cleaned. If the camera cannot pass a blockage, the line gets cleared first and filmed again. A clean report on an older cast iron or clay line still deserves another look in a few years.
