Rarely, and only in three situations. The trunk or a major structural root sits directly over the lateral, so nobody can reach the line without wrecking the tree. The roots have crushed the pipe rather than growing inside it. Or the tree already leans, splits or shows disease and was coming out regardless.
Roots enter through a defect. Close the defect and the tree becomes irrelevant to the sewer line, which is why our default answer stays no. Cutting down a healthy mature tree costs money, removes shade that matters through a North Texas summer, and takes value off the property.
Removal also fails as a fix on its own. The pipe stays broken, water keeps escaping, and the next tree finds it. Our crew has returned to DFW lines where a tree came out years earlier and roots had simply arrived from a neighbouring yard instead.
